mental health/ Christmas consumerism/ charities

Nov. 12 Mental health: At work I’m stressed out because it was busy over the long weekend.  Then it was busy today.  It’s the holiday season.

Chris Brown: I’m not a fan of his, but this bit about him in the Metro on Oct. 31, 2013 stood out to me.  He went to rehab for anger management.  His rep says: “His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point.”

I’m going to put this in my inspirational quotes.

Miranda Kerr: I’m not a fan of hers either, but also in the Metro on Oct. 31, 2013, there was a good quote from her: “Be good to yourself and then you’ll be able to give a lot more to your family, to your friends and to your work.”

Rants: I got some rants.

Winter: I don’t like waiting for the bus in the winter time, and I don’t like shoveling snow either.  I’m sure no one likes to do that.  Well at least my brother and sister will help me out.

On my days off since I don’t like to wait for the bus in the winter time, I will be staying at home.  On my days off I could go to the mall, but it’s so busy during the holiday season.

Christmas consumerism: The other rant is how the holiday season is all about buying stuff.  I remember this one time I was watching some show about the boy band NSYNC and they were panning on the band’s merchandise on the shelves.  The song they were playing was their hit “Bye, Bye, Bye.”  But if you watch it, you are thinking: “Buy, Buy, Buy.”  So the TV producers were clever.  Lol.

Nov. 13: I was reading the book I Will Teach You to be Rich by Ramit Sethi.  This book came out in 2009.  There is a part about gifts for friends and family on Chapter 4 “Conscious spending.”  On Pg. 106, 107: Americans spent $900 on Christmas gifts according to the American Research Group.  In 2008, it was half of that.

If you want to buy that, you would have to save $75 a month so you won’t go into debt.  It asks what about birthday gifts?  He lists his website:

I went to the website and it doesn’t work.  That shouldn’t be a surprise because the book came out in 2009.  However, I did find Sethi’s Nov. 2008 blog post:

Weddings: In the same chapter it mentions about saving for your wedding.  I have the Globe and Mail article “Mounting expectations take the cake” by Zosia Bielski on Oct. 18, 2013.  It mentions in Canada, the weddings that women planned are usually $29,000.  The further they do the planning, 75% complete, they learn it will be $38,000.

The point of the article was that there are a lot of couples who have big weddings and expect their guests to give them money to pay for the reception.  Guests should give money as gifts, but it shouldn’t be used to pay for the reception.  The money is for things like down payment for a house or condo.

Email: Here’s another rant.  I have this email where I go to Yahoo news and I read something.  I think the article is good, and then I put the link into the email so I can go and write about it later.  Same goes with the video links.  I have a gray computer and a black computer.  I went on the black computer and put some links into the email.  When I opened the email, the email was blank.

It’s like Yahoo email just deleted it.  That’s annoying.  At least I can go by memory for some of it.  At least if it’s my written emails where I put time and effort in is saved onto my 3.5 floppy disks.

Good news: What I do remember is I saved a link about a man donating his kidney to somebody.  Yeah, I know that’s vague.

A funny video where the parents are driving their 6 yr old daughter and 2 yr old daughter.  The mom tells them they’re going to Disneyland for a few days and the 6 yr old is crying because she’s happy.  The 2 yr old is kind of giving a weird look like “What?”

Save your money: I have to go look for the link I also saved.  Here’s “The Case against buying Christmas Presents.”  This is a great blog by post by Leo Babauta:

“8. The neverending clutter. What happens to all the gifts? They go on our shelves, in our closets, on the floor. We already have so much clutter — do we need more? We already have problems figuring out what to do with everything we own. Why do we want to clutter our homes even more? Why do we want to force clutter on our loved ones, oblige them to find a spot in their already cluttered homes for this gift we’ve given them, so they won’t offend us when we come to visit? Is this obligation really a gift?”

My opinion: If you Google “No Christmas gifts” there are a lot of links.  In my family, we never exchanged gifts.  My parents and grandma give my siblings and I cash.  That’s it.

Nov. 14: There are lots of pros.

  1. You save money.
  2. You save time from going to the mall.
  3. There isn’t any pressure and effort to find the perfect gift for all the people on your list.
  4. There isn’t any stress or guesswork in trying to find gifts.
When I was in high school, my sister gave me all her teen magazines.  I then cut out all these article, interviews, and pictures of celebrities that my friends love and I gave it to them by putting them in envelopes.  All my friends were happy and loved it.

I’m still like that now.  I have a co-worker and he loves The Walking Dead and Dexter, so I cut out newspaper articles and give it to him.  I also have cut out zombie- themed comics for him. Lol.

Nov. 15: Or that time I gave one of my old co-workers Manny an article about the dangers of energy drinks.  It talks about how unhealthy they are because of all the sugar and caffeine in it.  He read it and then gave it back to me saying he will still drink energy drinks.  Well, at least he knows.

Conclusion: In conclusion, you guys may already have bought Christmas gifts for your friends and family.  My family and I will just have a big Christmas dinner at home to celebrate.  I probably will watch lots of Christmas TV shows and movies.

The main thing is, please be mindful of the hype and how much money and time you spent.

Charities:

Philippines typhoon: Let’s think about the typhoon in the Philippines.   I put on my Facebook status update to donate to the World Vision because the Canadian govt. will match individual donations dollar for dollar from Nov. 9-Dec.9.

YESS medical clinic: The Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) Amoury Resource Centre is north of Whyte Ave.  I read in the Metro on Nov. 7, 2013 article “Clinic for homeless youth expands” by Stephanie Dubois.  80-100 youths have visited it since it opened in Jan.

Russian protest: This was in Metro on Nov. 12, 2013.  It’s called “Russia.  Man nails his genitals to ground in protest.”  It says: “A Russian performance artist nailed his genitals to the ground outside Moscow’s Red Square in protest over Russia’s ‘police state’ as the country marked national police day.”

Pyou Pavlensky did something crazy too like in the summer 2012, he sewed his mouth shut to protest the imprisonment of the Pussy Riot band.  You can donate or sign petitions at Amnesty International.

This reminds me of something in my deleted email.  My friend Maygen posted this news on Facebook about how a woman ripped off the testicles of her like 5 yr old son.  Then she tried to put it back on him with glue.  I’m going through Maygen’s Facebook page for that article, but don’t see it.  I Google it and here’s the article:
